The city is asking residents to stay in their homes during this time to allow first responders and other city staff to safely access the area and survey any damage the storm may cause. The biggest impacts from the significant weather event are expected to be storm surge, rain and wind damage.

City Closures

All City of Mobile offices, departments, and Municipal Court will be closed on Friday, October 9.

Trash, Garbage & Recycling

Recycling centers will be CLOSED on Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10.

FRIDAY GARBAGE: Garbage will run normal routes on Friday. If your garbage pickup is on Friday (DIP, McVay, Heron Lakes, Morningside, and Skyland Park areas), please bring your garbage cans in from the street as soon as they’re emptied, if possible. We would like to avoid garbage cans floating/blowing down the streets.

FRIDAY TRASH: If you receive Friday trash pickup, you may see your trash piles picked up on Thursday (a day early). Do not be alarmed; we will still run through those routes again tomorrow. Our team is trying to get as much done before the storm hits tomorrow.

MONDAY TRASH: If you receive Monday South trash pickup, please DO NOT put your trash piles out before the storm. The piles can become wind-blown debris. Please wait until Sunday to put your trash piles out.

Sandbags

The City of Mobile will be providing sand and sandbags for residents in flood-prone areas. The sandbags will be available at Mobile Police Department Precinct 1 located at 2601 Dauphin Island Parkway Suite D or the James Seals Community Center at 540 Texas Street. They will be available while supplies last, starting at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8.

Animal Shelter Emergency Fosters

The City of Mobile Animal Services Department is looking for emergency fosters ahead of the storm. If you are local to Mobile or the surrounding areas, please submit a foster application by clicking here.

Event Cancellations

Friday’s Halloween-themed LoDa Artwalk has been moved to next Friday, October 16. Saturday’s Fall Market in the Park and Dauphin Street Beer Festival have both been canceled. If you purchased Beer Festival tickets, please reach out to the bar that you purchased your ticket from to get a refund.

Hurricane season begins on June 1 and continues through November 30. The time to prepare for a hurricane is before a storm starts to form. Find important information about building a kit, making a plan, staying informed, and other resources below.

Build a Kit

Build a disaster kit in preparation of hurricane season. Whether you’re evacuating or sheltering-in-place, you’re going to need supplies for during and after the storm. A basic disaster supplies kit should include items like water, food, a radio, flashlights, extra batteries, a first aid kit, cell phone chargers, a whistle, prescription and non-prescription medications, eyeglasses and contacts, pet food, and important family documents. For a full list, visit ready.gov/kit.

The Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday of the last full weekend in February and ends at midnight on the following Sunday.

Make a Plan

Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan, and share it with your family. Determine family meeting places, and make sure to include an out-of-town location in case of evacuation. Write down on paper a list of emergency contacts, and make sure to include utilities and other critical services — remember, the internet may not be accessible during or after a storm. Click here to learn more about making a plan.

Hurricanes and storm surges are serious threats to the Gulf Coast, and when a storm intensifies, evacuating vulnerable areas may be crucial. Click here to find your evacuation zone. Please note that the City of Mobile does not have the authority to issue an evacuation order. However, the City of Mobile will share information regarding evacuation orders from the State of Alabama.

Discuss your plan of action during a hurricane ahead of time to decide what route you will take during an evacuation and where you will travel to take shelter from the storm. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Your destination could be a friend or relative who lives in a well built home outside flood prone areas. Plan several routes. Be sure to account for your pets.
